Backpacking is a great way to get away on the weekends and break from the daily rat race. As much as we’d like to sleep out in the open under the stars, having a good bit of cover to keep out the bugs and weather is often a necessity. ALPS Mountaineering has just released two new lightweight tents for backpackers – the Helix 1-and-2-person tents.

On a couple of my recent backpacking trips, I was fortunate enough to find shelter without having to use a tent. However, out here in the Appalachians, trails often do not have shelters for several miles and you never know when you’ll just get winded or find the perfect spot to camp for the night. Carrying a tent should not be cumbersome and that is why ALPS Mountaineering has developed the Helix set of 1-and-2-person tents. The Helix tent has a minimum weight of just 2 lbs and 14 oz or 3 lbs, 12 oz for the 1-person and 2-person models respectively. Both tents offer plenty of space for one or two people to sleep comfortably and are light enough to add to any backpacking setup without adding unnecessary weight with lightweight aluminum poles.

Both tents come in a Charcoal/Red coloring and have an 84-inch floor length. An added benefit for the 2-person version of the Helix is that it features two doors for easy entry and exit for either individual sleeping inside the tent. Optional vestibules on either side allow for extra space for each camper to store their personal gear without having it inside the sleeping area. The Helix 1-person tent is sold for $219.99 and the 2-person Helix tent is sold for $249.99.
